Dubai, Jan 18 (NationPress) The Gulf Giants secured their inaugural victory in the ILT20 Season 3 with a remarkable six-wicket win over the Dubai Capitals on Saturday night.

In pursuit of 166 runs, Gerhard Erasmus and Shimron Hetmyer forged a decisive partnership worth 80 runs off just 44 balls. Erasmus concluded with a brilliant unbeaten 34-ball fifty, while Hetmyer also remained not out, scoring 41 runs in merely 20 balls, including four sixes.

The Dubai Capitals, batting first, struggled with regular wicket losses, finishing at 165/7 in their 20 overs. Aayan Afzal Khan and Mark Adair spearheaded the Giants’ bowling attack, each claiming two wickets.

Adam Lyth quickly set the pace for the Giants’ chase, hitting four boundaries and a six during his quick-fire 32 runs off just 17 deliveries. His innings ended in the eighth over, with Farhan Khan taking the pivotal wicket.

Earlier, James Vince was dismissed for 10 runs in the 4th over, giving Obed McCoy the first breakthrough. The Capitals tightened their grip soon after when Scott Kuggeleijn sent Ibrahim Zadran back to the pavilion, putting the Giants under early pressure.

Jordan Cox and Gerhard Erasmus steadied the innings with a 35-run collaboration. Cox played cautiously but fell for 27 runs while trying to play a big shot, caught by Olly Stone off Sikandar Raza’s bowling. The match was delicately poised with the Giants at 88/5 in 11.5 overs.

With Shimron Hetmyer joining Erasmus, the Giants required 48 runs off 30 balls. Erasmus alleviated the pressure with a 12-run over against Obed McCoy in the 16th over. Hetmyer followed suit with an explosive 18-run over, hitting two sixes off Olly Stone, pushing the Giants closer to victory. The duo added 14 runs in the 18th over before Hetmyer sealed the win with a six over mid-wicket, completing the chase in 18.1 overs.

Earlier, the Dubai Capitals had a mixed start, losing both openers during the powerplay despite showing aggressive intent. Shai Hope fell for 11 runs to Blessing Muzarabani, while Ben Dunk looked dangerous with a 28-run knock, which included three fours and two sixes, before being dismissed by Uzair Khan.

Aayan Afzal Khan struck decisively in the 8th over, claiming Brandon McMullen’s wicket for 11 runs, worsening the Capitals’ situation. Sikandar Raza and Rovman Powell, however, stabilized the innings with a crucial 45-run partnership off 32 balls.

Raza unleashed four consecutive boundaries against Tymal Mills in the 11th over. Yet, neither player could capitalize on their starts—Raza was dismissed for 28 by Wahidullah Zadran, while Powell’s knock of 25 was curtailed by Aayan Afzal Khan, leaving the Capitals at 121/5 in 15.1 overs.

Gulbadin Naib contributed 15 runs in the death overs before falling to Mark Adair, who quickly claimed two wickets, including Scott Kuggeleijn. Dasun Shanaka’s late surge proved vital, as his 20-ball innings of 33, featuring three sixes, propelled the Capitals to a respectable 165/7 in their allotted overs.

“We were eager to secure our first win after a few losses. Knowing we have quality players instills confidence. Teams often feel the pressure when chasing their first win, but we united and cultivated positive energy, which really helped us express ourselves on the field. I have special memories at this ground with the Namibian team,” said Player of the Match, Gerhard Erasmus.
