Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) India's remarkable distance runner, Gulveer Singh, has shattered the national men's half-marathon (21km) record during a prestigious event in New York this past Sunday.
As reported by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the 27-year-old army athlete finished third in the New York City Half Marathon with an impressive time of 59:42. He was closely followed by South Africa's Adriaan Wildschutt, who took first place at 59:30, and Moroccan-American long-distance runner Zouhair Talbi, who clocked in at 59:41.
The previous national record of 1:00:30 was established by steeplechase specialist Avinash Sable in 2020 during the Delhi Half Marathon.
With this achievement, Gulveer Singh has become the first Indian distance runner to hold multiple national records across various events, including the 3,000m track and the 25km road race. He is also the holder of the men's track records for both the 5,000m and 10,000m.
At the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, Gulveer showcased his talent by winning both the 5,000m and 10,000m track events. This year, he is optimistic about securing podium finishes at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Asian Games in September.
“I’m in great shape and eager for positive outcomes in the forthcoming international competitions,” Gulveer stated in an AFI release on Sunday.
Currently, the army athlete trains in Colorado Springs, USA.
Recently, Gulveer was included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme's (TOPS) Core group after a performance evaluation, alongside emerging pistol shooters Samrat Rana and Suruchi Singh, and world champion para-shuttler Pramod Bhagat.
Last year, he set a new national record for the 10,000m at the Ten Track Festival, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour, finishing sixth in San Juan Capistrano, California, with a time of 27:00.22 seconds.
This timing marked an improvement of over 14 seconds from his previous record of 27:14.88, which he had set in Hachoji, Japan, in November 2024. Gulveer narrowly missed qualifying for the World Athletics Championships 2025, falling short of the qualification mark of 27:00.00 by just 22 milliseconds.
