New Delhi, Dec 10 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa expressed his deep admiration for all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who showcased an outstanding all-round display upon his return from injury, aiding the team in securing a 101-run victory in the opening T20I against South Africa.
Pandya contributed a remarkable unbeaten 59 runs off 28 balls in the first innings and recorded exceptional bowling figures of 1-16 in two overs.
This significant win over the Proteas allowed India to send a powerful message early in the series. South Africa’s innings quickly dwindled, lacking the expected resistance, thanks to the aggressive bowling from the Men in Blue. The pitch at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack posed challenges for all players except Pandya, who thrived under the conditions.
"Here comes a player returning from an injury break, and it feels as though he never left. From the very first ball, it seemed like he had been in top form. The initial ball resulted in a six, followed by another six on the third ball, and he reached a 50 in just 24 balls. Subsequently, he bowled and took crucial wickets, including that of David Miller, a batsman he has dismissed multiple times," Uthappa remarked.
Referring to Pandya as an out-and-out match-winner, Uthappa highlighted the unparalleled balance he provides to any team.
"In my opinion, he is a definitive match-winner, someone who will play a vital role in India’s success at the World Cup or any T20 format, whether it’s for India, in the IPL, or in white-ball cricket overall. He offers a balance that others cannot. After a long time, India saw Hardik alongside another fast-bowling all-rounder, Shivam Dube, which is quite rare for our country," he continued.
With India excelling in all facets of the game and key players finding their form at the right moment, the opening T20I served as an early reminder that they will likely be among the frontrunners when the T20 World Cup arrives in 2026.
