Nagpur, Feb 28 (NationPress) Vidarbha’s left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey has made history in the Ranji Trophy by securing the title for the most wickets taken in a single season. He achieved this remarkable feat by claiming 3-88 on the third day of the final match against Kerala at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium on Friday.

During Kerala's first innings, after Vidarbha batted first and scored 379, Dubey reached this milestone with his third wicket, dismissing M.D. Nidheesh shortly after Tea on Day Three. Earlier, the talented spinner had already sent Kerala's leading run-scorer, Aditya Sarwate, back to the pavilion for 79 runs and trapped Salman Nizar—who has been Kerala’s top scorer this season—LBW just before the lunch break.

With his performance of 3-88, Dubey has surpassed Ashutosh Aman from Bihar, who had taken 68 wickets in the 2018-19 season, and Jaydev Unadkat from Saurashtra, who claimed 67 wickets in the 2019-20 season. Currently, Dubey has a total of 69 wickets this season.

Throughout the 2024-25 season, Dubey’s unwavering performance has been vital for Vidarbha. A pivotal moment occurred during the semifinal against Mumbai, where his seven-wicket haul in the second innings secured a significant victory, allowing Vidarbha to reach the final.

In the semifinal against Mumbai, Dubey notched his seventh five-wicket haul of the season, tying with others for the most in a single Ranji Trophy edition among bowlers from the Elite group.

The 22-year-old, who debuted in First-Class cricket in 2022, now stands among an elite group of only six bowlers to exceed 60 wickets in a season, following Aman (68), Jaydev Unadkat (67), Bishan Singh Bedi (64), Kanwaljit Singh (62), and Dodda Ganesh (62).

Besides his remarkable wicket tally, Dubey has also been a strong contributor with the bat, accumulating 472 runs across 17 innings, which includes five half-centuries. He becomes just the fourth player in Ranji Trophy history to achieve the all-rounder’s double of over 450 runs and 50 wickets in a single season.

Dubey’s exceptional run in the tournament has been a crucial factor in Vidarbha’s dominance, as his ability to generate turn and bounce has posed challenges for even the most experienced batters. His performances have solidified his position in the elite ranks of bowlers who have made a lasting impact on Indian domestic cricket.
