New Delhi, March 6 (NationPress) March 2 marked the day when Vidarbha conquered the disappointment of losing the 2023/24 Ranji Trophy final, emerging victorious in the esteemed tournament for the third time amidst their fervent home supporters at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.

This season, Vidarbha achieved eight outright victories, while three matches saw them secure first innings leads, including in the final against Kerala. The team, led by Akshay Wadkar, dominated both batting and bowling charts, thanks to Yash Rathod and Harsh Dubey, respectively.

Rathod concluded the season as the top run-scorer with 960 runs across ten matches, while Dubey set a Ranji Trophy record with 69 wickets in a season.

In an exclusive interview with IANS, Rathod reflects on Vidarbha's Ranji Trophy triumph, the supportive environment fostering their success, his outstanding performances, and more.

Q. What does it feel like to be part of a Ranji Trophy-winning team with Vidarbha?

A. It's an incredible and emotional experience because last year we fell just short of winning the championship. Finally, this year, we've achieved it, and I feel elated. It was a dream to win the Ranji Trophy, as I watched the finals in 2017-18 and 2018-19. This year, being the highest run-scorer for Vidarbha and in India is particularly special. Sharing the top spots in batting and bowling charts with Harsh is another high point.

Q. What were your goals before the season, and how successful were you?

A. Before the season, I aimed to score over 1000 runs. My captain and coach supported me, providing clarity on my role in the middle order. This guidance greatly aided my preparation, and credit goes to our coach and captain for helping me come close to that target.

Q. Can you discuss the impact of coach Usman Ghani and captain Akshay Wadkar?

A. Usman sir has been incredibly influential; last year I scored around 500 runs in six games. After the previous season, we conducted a video analysis to identify mistakes and areas for improvement. Our off-season preparation based on that analysis yielded results. Usman sir deserves significant credit for this.

Akshay is among the best captains I've played under. Having clarity about opportunities boosts a player's confidence. Last year, he assured me, 'If you play, you'll have ample opportunities. Just be ready.' This kind of communication was crucial for the whole team and contributed to our triumph.

Q. Your conversion rate has been remarkable with five centuries and three fifties. What’s your secret?

A. Last year, I scored three fifties and one hundred, which caused me to miss the Duleep Trophy. From the start of this season, I focused on converting fifties into hundreds. Scoring centuries is vital for advancing to higher levels like the Duleep Trophy, India A, or the national team. My performances against Puducherry and Uttarakhand, when the team needed runs, were particularly fulfilling.

Q. What have you learned from senior batters like Karun Nair and Dhruv Shorey?

A. It's been a great experience. I've learned how to conduct myself on and off the field, communicate effectively, and approach the game. Their timely advice on technique and handling pressure has been invaluable in my development.

Q. You debuted in the Ranji Trophy in 2021, and now you’re a champion. Can you describe your journey?

A. The journey has been fulfilling. Breaking into a Ranji Trophy team that has won back-to-back championships is no small feat given the competition in Vidarbha. After two matches with subpar performances, I went back to basics and prepared consistently. When I finally got my opportunity, I seized it and have since played regularly for the team.

Q. With nearly 3000 fans and family at the stadium, how special was winning in front of them?

A. It was an unforgettable experience, especially since my dad was there for the first time. Winning the championship in front of him was emotional and a proud moment for me. The support from our home crowd added to the special nature of the victory.

Q. What do you think is the secret behind Vidarbha's three Ranji Trophy titles, and do other teams inquire about it?

A. Preparation and a clear vision for each season are key. Prashant Vaidya, our CADC Chairman, has been instrumental in our success. Our camaraderie and mutual support among players also play a crucial role. Other teams have approached us, curious about our success. I tell them our strong bonding and past experiences in age-group cricket help us perform in pressure situations.

Q. After this championship, what are your future ambitions?

A. My dream is to represent India, followed by playing in the IPL. My plan is straightforward: I aim to compete in the Duleep Trophy, then India A, and ultimately make my way into the Indian team as soon as possible. At 24, I aspire to play for India by 25-26. To achieve this, I must seize every opportunity and perform well.
