Is Hazlewood on Track for T20 WC 2026?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sydney, Jan 14 (NationPress) Australia’s top fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has shared an update on his recovery journey, with aspirations to return before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which is set to commence in the subcontinent on February 7.
Hazlewood, a crucial player for Australia in recent years, has faced scrutiny due to ongoing injury issues. The right-arm fast bowler was initially ruled out at the beginning of the Ashes series due to a hamstring strain, and later encountered an Achilles injury while going through rehabilitation.
He will be absent during the final stages of the Big Bash League and the T20I series against Pakistan at the end of January. Nevertheless, he is targeting a comeback in a warm-up match prior to the World Cup early next month.
Hazlewood mentioned that the extended recovery time has allowed him to make steady progress, enabling him to start light bowling and running while adhering to his strength training regimen.
“Everything is proceeding according to plan. We opted for a few additional weeks after realizing I wouldn’t make the Tests. I bowled a few deliveries off the half run last week. My running is going well, and all the strength work is progressing smoothly, so yes, I’m on track,” the fast bowler informed ESPNcricinfo.
In October last year, Hazlewood was in exceptional form during the white-ball series against India, taking three wickets across three ODI matches while conceding only 72 runs. He also participated in three T20 matches, giving away just 37 runs in 12 overs and claiming three wickets.
Australia remains a strong contender to win the T20 World Cup, having previously secured the title in 2021 under the leadership of Aaron Finch. They did not progress to the semi-finals in the 2024 edition after a defeat to Afghanistan in the quarter-finals.
The team led by Mitchell Marsh has been placed in Group B alongside Ireland, Oman, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe. Their group-stage campaign kicks off against Ireland on February 11 in Colombo.
