Mumbai, Oct 26 (NationPress) The head coach position for the Pakistan women’s cricket team is expected to change hands, as current coach Mohammad Wasim is likely to be dismissed following a disappointing World Cup performance where the team ended up without a victory in seven matches, according to reports.
Wasim, who previously played for Pakistan and served as the men's chief selector, may become the first casualty of this underwhelming campaign in which the national team suffered losses, including a defeat against their long-time rivals India in Colombo, where all matches were hosted, as reported by Telecom Asia Sport on Sunday.
“Wasim is poised to exit, as despite being granted full authority in player selection, assembling the support staff, and managing the final eleven, the outcomes have been dismal. These unsatisfactory results have prompted the Pakistan Cricket Board to consider a system overhaul, with a new head coach likely being a foreign candidate,” sources informed www.telecomasia.net.
The Pakistan women's team qualified for the World Cup after a stellar performance in the Qualifying round held at home in April, winning all five matches.
However, they lost a match they were favored to win against Bangladesh by seven wickets after being bowled out for just 129 runs. Their second match against Sri Lanka, which was also expected to be manageable, ended in a washout.
“Despite Wasim's reputation as a skilled batter, he was anticipated to resolve the team's batting and fielding issues, yet the Pakistan squad struggled with both aspects,” sources indicated.
The team failed to bat through their full quota of 50 overs in any game, highlighting significant areas for improvement in ODIs. They had Australia at a precarious 76-7 and 115-8 but allowed them to recover and post 221 runs. Similarly, they had England at 133 in a rain-affected match, and were 34-1 when rain disrupted their chance for victory.
“Wasim did not effectively motivate the players or captain Fatima Sana, who made critical errors in matches against Bangladesh, India, and Australia. He should have communicated decisions through a reserve player,” sources added.
“Wasim’s decision to exclude seasoned player Nida Dar throughout the year weakened the squad’s experience. Additionally, he dropped another experienced player, Aliya Riaz, for the crucial match against Australia, opting instead for Eyman Fatima, who unfortunately scored a duck,” the source revealed to www.telecomasia.net.
The report indicated that the Pakistan Cricket Board plans to announce a job listing for the head coach position, likely next week.
In recent years, Pakistan has had two foreign coaches: New Zealander Mark Coles, who had two stints – the first from 2017 to 2019, which was more fruitful, and a second appointment in April 2023, but he departed just four months later.
David Hemp, a former player and captain from Bermuda, served as the head coach for the women’s team from October 2020 until August 2022.
This was followed by interim arrangements with Salim Jaffer and Mohtashim Rasheed before Wasim took over as head coach in June 2024.
