Amsterdam, May 31 (NationPress) Ajax has finalized a deal with John Heitinga to become the new head coach until June 30, 2027. Marcel Keizer will serve as his assistant, signing a contract for the same duration.
Heitinga spent the last two seasons in the English Premier League as an assistant coach at West Ham United and Liverpool, working alongside Arne Slot. Before heading to England in the summer of 2023, the ex-Ajax player had a stint as the interim head coach for Ajax 1 for several months. Since 2016, Heitinga, a former international who played for Ajax, Atlético Madrid, Everton, Fulham, and Hertha BSC, has held various coaching roles at Ajax.
"I am truly eager to begin this new chapter. My experiences in England have been invaluable. I learned a lot while working with David Moyes and Arne Slot and gained insights into the inner workings of two major clubs. It is a privilege to step into the role of head coach at Ajax," stated Heitinga.
His appointment came after Francesco Farioli departed the club following a disastrous slide. Ajax had a commanding lead in the Eredivisie, only to let a nine-point advantage slip with five matches remaining, allowing PSV Eindhoven to claim the Dutch title.
Technical director Alex Kroes remarked, "John is an exceptional coach with great ambition. He has evolved in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in recent years. Marijn and I spoke with him last year and have maintained contact since then."
"John is well-acquainted with the club, and we are confident that alongside Marcel, he will enhance our players' skills and build upon the advancements made since last summer, particularly in terms of high-performance culture and discipline. It’s beneficial that it was established early in the summer break that they will lead the team starting at the end of June. Marijn and I can now focus on shaping the roster for next season alongside John and the rest of the team involved."
