Hong Kong, Sep 14 (NationPress) Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen secured the runner-up position at the Hong Kong Open after a defeat against Li Shifeng from China, with scores of 15-21, 12-21 in the men's singles final on Sunday.
This marked India's second runner-up finish, following the men's doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who also fell to the Chinese duo of Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in their final.
Sen, showcasing impressive form throughout the tournament, began the final confidently. The initial stages of the first game were closely contested, with both competitors exchanging points. Sen quickly amassed nine points; however, once Li settled into his game, the momentum shifted. The Chinese player unleashed a series of powerful smashes and precise placements, comfortably taking the first game.
In the second game, Sen appeared to rally with an aggressive start, securing an early lead. But a couple of mistimed shots at critical junctures allowed Li to equalize at 4-4. From that point, the Chinese athlete took command, exploiting Sen’s mistakes with relentless pressure and strategic angles.
Although Sen initially excelled in longer rallies, Li’s tactic of finishing points swiftly kept the Indian under constant strain. The match concluded dramatically with Li sealing the win with a deft crosscourt net shot, finishing in straight games.
This defeat is a setback for Sen as he continues his quest for a first Super 500 title. His resilience and adaptability were evident once again, but on this occasion, Li’s superior execution and calmness during crucial moments proved to be the deciding factors in a match lasting 45 minutes.
