Former England captain Nasser Hussain has declared that India can no longer afford to overlook Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, insisting the 15-year-old batting prodigy has done more than enough to earn a senior national team berth following a record-shattering Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign. Hussain made the remarks on The ICC Review alongside presenter Sanjana Ganesan.

A Record-Breaking IPL Season

Sooryavanshi finished the IPL 2026 season with 776 runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 237.30 — numbers that placed him among the most destructive batters in the tournament's history. His 72 sixes in the season were the most ever hit by any batter in a single IPL edition, underscoring the sheer scale of his impact at an age when most players are still in age-group cricket.

'Such an easy answer to give to that is that yes, he has to play. I didn't watch too much of the IPL, to be honest, but I watched clips of Sooryavanshi, and what an incredible talent,' Hussain said. He acknowledged the selection dilemma India's panel faces — a batting order already stacked with established T20 specialists — but argued that generational talent must override logistical concerns. 'India has a list of batters they could play and should play, but in the end, someone makes a case, a consistent case, and an incredible case for being picked. In the end, you have to say, I don't care who we're leaving out, this lad has to play,' he added.

The Tendulkar Comparison

Hussain drew a personal parallel to underscore Sooryavanshi's rare aura, recalling his first sighting of a young Sachin Tendulkar at the Nehru Cup. 'This young lad strode out with pads on that I'd never seen before, and his name was Sachin Tendulkar. And I was in complete awe,' he said. Hussain noted that Tendulkar himself has been vocal in his admiration for Sooryavanshi's bat swing on social media platform X, as has former India captain Virat Kohli. 'If you can impress Sachin Tendulkar and impress Virat Kohli and the rest, he's impressed everyone. What an unbelievable talent,' Hussain remarked. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has also publicly predicted a senior debut for the teenager.

Challenges Still Ahead

Despite his enthusiasm, Hussain was careful to flag the tests that lie in wait. He pointed out that Sooryavanshi has yet to bat in unfamiliar overseas conditions, negotiate a moving ball over a sustained spell, or navigate the inevitable rough patch in form that every batter eventually encounters. 'There are other challenges doing it away from home. Doing it against a ball that's moving, facing a downturn in form, which he's not had yet, finding a weakness, maybe the short ball, who knows? But he needs to get through all of that before you get to a world event, and he's going to be a star,' Hussain said.

From Under-19 Stardom to India A

Sooryavanshi's credentials extend well beyond franchise cricket. Earlier in 2026, he was a central figure in India's Under-19 World Cup triumph in Zimbabwe, where he scored the highest individual total ever recorded in an Under-19 World Cup final — a performance that came against England, adding a layer of irony to Hussain's endorsement. Selectors have since named him in the India A squad for the upcoming tri-series featuring Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, beginning 9 June, signalling that the pathway to a full senior call-up is being managed in deliberate steps.
