India's chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Saturday confirmed that teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned his maiden T20I call-up for upcoming tours of Ireland, England, and the Asian Games, crediting the youngster's explosive IPL 2026 campaign as the decisive factor. Speaking at a press conference at the BCCI headquarters in New Delhi, Agarkar said Sooryavanshi had effectively 'picked himself' through sheer performance.

Sooryavanshi's IPL 2026 Numbers

The teenage batter finished as the leading run-getter of IPL 2026, amassing 776 runs for the Rajasthan Royals, which included one century and five half-centuries. He was awarded both the Most Valuable Player and Emerging Player of the tournament. Agarkar noted that Sooryavanshi had almost single-handedly carried Rajasthan Royals through the playoff stages.

'What do you say, we've seen what he can do. You saw, even towards those playoffs, almost single-handedly carried the Rajasthan Royals. For a young kid, I don't need to talk about how well he's batting or how well he's playing. It's not just this season. He's obviously made a great start last season,' Agarkar said.

'To back it up for a young kid in a competition that's as competitive and has a high-pressure environment, and how explosive he can be, and a game-changer that he can be. So we've, like everyone else that's watched cricket, or at least watched T20 cricket in India, we've got high hopes of him, and I think he just has picked himself really,' he added.

India A Assignment Before International Debut

Sooryavanshi's national call-up follows his inclusion in the India 'A' squad for the 50-over tri-series in Sri Lanka, beginning 9 June in Dambulla. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the priority remains sending Sooryavanshi to Ireland and England, with selectors and the technical staff closely monitoring his workload and development to ensure his long-term career is handled carefully.

Agarkar was measured about the youngster's red-ball future, saying, 'With regards to red ball, I mean, he's a kid, and let him just be as he's just starting his journey. I'm sure when the season starts, the domestic season starts, and he plays for his team, plays a little bit of red ball cricket, we'll wait and observe at this point, why jump the gun?'

Rajat Patidar, Hardik Pandya, and Other Selection Calls

On Rajat Patidar missing out despite helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru defend their IPL title, Agarkar acknowledged that many deserving players were unavoidably left out. 'You can only pick 15, and we're very happy with this one,' he said, noting that India had won a World Cup just a couple of months prior with the current core group.

Hardik Pandya was not named in the T20I squads, with Agarkar explaining that the all-rounder's immediate focus is the ODI series against Afghanistan. The selector cited the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa as the medium-term priority for Pandya, adding that his absence from T20I duty also opens the door for players like Nitish Reddy.

Prince Yadav and Bumrah's Workload Management

Agarkar confirmed that Prince Yadav's inclusion in T20I squads for the Ireland and England series was driven by consistent domestic performances — notably in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the IPL — where his ability to bowl under pressure and move the ball in the death overs stood out. 'He kind of fits everything in white-ball cricket,' Agarkar said.

On Jasprit Bumrah, Agarkar stressed that keeping the pace spearhead fit for the World Test Championship cycle remains paramount, with India still in contention for the WTC final. Bumrah will feature in the Asian Games, but his T20I appearances will be managed carefully around a demanding Test schedule. 'The main aim is to try and keep him fit for the Tests and the one-dayers,' Agarkar said.

With Sooryavanshi's international journey now formally underway, all eyes will be on how the teenage sensation adapts when facing international-quality bowling for the first time.
