Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has said that teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi must significantly improve his fielding before earning a place in the senior Indian men's cricket team. Kaif's remarks came after Rajasthan Royals suffered a five-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on 18 May, with Sooryavanshi's misfields contributing to crucial runs conceded as Rajasthan failed to defend a total of 193/8.

Kaif's Fielding Verdict

Speaking on JioHotstar's 'Champions Waali Commentary', Kaif was direct in his assessment. 'I believe scouts should also take a fielding test while scouting players. The scouts are bringing the right players; they are doing a great job, but I have not seen Vaibhav Sooryavanshi take a single catch yet. If he wants to play for India, he needs to improve his fielding ability. He needs to pass that fielding test first,' Kaif said.

Kaif specifically cited a dropped catch off the bat of Sahil Parakh, arguing the opportunity was eminently takeable. 'The ball that came towards him was at a good height. There was no need for Sooryavanshi to jump to take that catch. All he needed to do was take it near his waist, but he missed it. Vaibhav is really talented with the bat, no doubt about that, but when it comes to fielding, he is still not ready,' Kaif added.

Sooryavanshi's Batting Brilliance

Despite the fielding concerns, Sooryavanshi's batting continues to dazzle. The 15-year-old struck a blistering 46 off 21 balls during the powerplay before being dismissed by a slower delivery from Madhav Tiwari. His ability to dominate from the very first ball has drawn comparisons that few young cricketers ever attract.

Harbhajan Singh's Glowing Praise

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, also speaking on the broadcast, outlined the challenge Sooryavanshi poses to any bowler. 'Against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, my plan would be to get his wicket anyhow. My plan would be to spin the ball and keep it away from his hitting arc. I don't want him to play his shots while standing in the crease,' Harbhajan said.

Harbhajan went further, placing Sooryavanshi in rare company. 'I have played with many players, but I have never seen a batter like Sooryavanshi who dominates every bowler from ball one. I have dismissed Chris Gayle many times, but Sooryavanshi is at a different level altogether. His bat flow is something I have never seen,' he added. The praise from a bowler of Harbhajan's vintage — who has faced the world's most destructive hitters — underscores just how extraordinary Sooryavanshi's natural talent is considered to be.
