Hussey Applauds Bumrah's Ascension as One of the Elite Bowlers Worldwide

New Delhi, Dec 21 (NationPress) Former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey recounted his first encounter with a young Jasprit Bumrah during his brief time with the Mumbai Indians in 2014. Hussey admitted he could not have predicted the rapid ascent of the slender fast bowler, yet he was not entirely taken aback either.
The former Australian batting legend reflected on his early meeting with Bumrah, the skepticism surrounding his unconventional bowling technique, and the valuable advice he imparted to the young bowler at the outset of his career.
“I actually played a year with him in the IPL when I was with the Mumbai Indians,” Hussey stated in an interview with Willow Talk. “He was just a young talent emerging. I remember facing him in the nets and literally couldn’t get bat on the ball. I felt like I was using a toothpick.”
The Aussie great was left spellbound by Bumrah’s exceptional action and swift speed.
“I couldn’t even see the ball, let alone anticipate it coming from his hand. His action is so distinct, so misleading. My first impression? Honestly, I didn’t think he’d even make it to the crease. His run-up appeared staggered and awkward. I remember thinking, ‘Who is this guy?’ Then suddenly, woof—the ball zipped past my eyebrows at 145kph!”
At that time, Bumrah was regarded as a white-ball specialist with limited prospects in Test cricket. Hussey recalled the discussions circulating in Indian cricket circles back then.
“In India, there was considerable doubt. People speculated that his action and run-up would be too taxing on his body, that he wouldn’t endure in Test cricket,” Hussey explained. “They believed he was suited solely for white-ball cricket. However, even then, I could recognize his skills and potential. I knew that if he had the ambition to play Test cricket, he could excel.”
Hussey expressed his admiration for Bumrah’s accomplishments in the longest format of the game. “Isn’t he performing exceptionally well at the moment? It’s just remarkable to witness his development.”
Hussey also shared an anecdote about a pivotal moment early in Bumrah’s IPL journey. It was a match between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2014 when Bumrah dismissed the legendary AB de Villiers.
“He broke into the scene in the IPL and bowled magnificently. I remember one match where he took out AB de Villiers. Obviously, AB is one of the greatest, and Bumrah gave him a significant send-off. AB was not pleased,” Hussey recalled.
The send-off didn’t resonate well with Hussey either. After the match, the veteran took the young bowler aside for a discussion.
“I told him, ‘Mate, you don’t need to do that. You possess so much skill and talent. Just taking the wicket is the biggest statement you can make. If you seek respect in the game and from your peers, you don’t need send-offs.’”
Hussey acknowledged it was an atypical moment for Bumrah, who he described as one of the most humble and grounded cricketers he’s encountered.
“He’s such a wonderful person. That send-off was out of character for him. He’s always smiling, always composed, and consistent in his demeanor. He doesn’t get overly emotional. It’s one of the reasons he’s such an extraordinary bowler and such a pleasure to watch.”
Reflecting on the past, Hussey marveled at Bumrah’s evolution since those early days. “He’s incredible. Observing him transform into one of the best bowlers in the world has been astonishing. From a kid in the nets who intimidated us to one of the most esteemed cricketers globally, it’s been a delight to witness.”
