New Delhi, Jan 25 (NationPress) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has reportedly issued a stern warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), indicating that significant sanctions could follow should they choose to withdraw from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 in solidarity with Bangladesh, following Bangladesh's exit from the tournament due to their refusal to play matches in India.
On Saturday, the ICC confirmed that Scotland would take the place of Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) opted out of the event based on the established match schedule.
In the wake of Bangladesh's departure, Naqvi criticized the ICC for its “double standards” that seem to favor India, calling the situation faced by Bangladesh “an injustice”. He emphasized that a final decision regarding their participation in the T20 World Cup would be made after discussions with the government of Pakistan.
“Bangladesh has been treated unfairly. One nation can make any decision whenever it likes, while another cannot. Bangladesh is a crucial stakeholder, and such an injustice should not occur,” Naqvi expressed to reporters on Saturday.
“Our position on World Cup participation will align with the directives from the government of Pakistan. The Prime Minister is currently not in Pakistan. Once he returns, I will be able to provide our definitive decision. We follow the government's lead, not the ICC,” he added.
According to a report by The Indian Express, should Pakistan decide to withdraw from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, the ICC could enforce sanctions that could encompass the suspension of all bilateral series, denial of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for foreign players in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and exclusion from the Asia Cup.
“If Pakistan opts out of the T20 World Cup, the ICC will enact a series of sanctions, including halting bilateral series with any international team, no NOC for foreign players in the PSL, and barring participation in the Asia Cup,” an ICC source was quoted in the report.
Pakistan is set to conduct all its matches in Sri Lanka for this event, which is already a co-hosted affair, with their first match scheduled against the Netherlands on February 7. Their group stage clash against India is slated for February 15 in Colombo.
