New Delhi, Nov 13 (NationPress) Emerging talent Phoebe Litchfield has expressed her appreciation for Meg Lanning's endorsement of her potential as a future captain of Australia, stating she would eagerly embrace the opportunity should it arise.

The 21-year-old opener reacted to former captain Lanning's remarks suggesting that Litchfield could be a perfect successor to Alyssa Healy once the seasoned wicketkeeper decides to step down.

Lanning made these comments following Australia’s semi-final elimination at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, where they were defeated by eventual champions India. The two-time World Cup-winning captain noted that while it might be premature for significant changes, she alluded to Litchfield’s leadership potential for guiding the next generation.

Although flattered, Litchfield admitted that the compliment made her somewhat anxious, but she would not hesitate to take on the role if offered.

“I look at our group, and we've got so many natural leaders; I just learn from them. If the day comes, I'd definitely seize it with both hands. I can assure you that players like Ash Gardner, Sophie Molineux, Annabel Sutherland, and Tahlia McGrath are amazing leaders, and I look up to them. If I do get that chance one day, it’s because of them,” Litchfield shared on The ICC Review.

Litchfield has captaincy experience, having led the Sydney Thunder in the Women’s Big Bash League, where she has been commended for her calm demeanor and strategic skills.

With the sting of the World Cup exit still fresh, Australia is now setting its sights on redemption in the upcoming multi-format home series against India. The two teams are scheduled to clash in three T20Is and three ODIs starting February 15, followed by a one-off Test in Perth.

Litchfield, who was the fifth-highest run-scorer in the recent World Cup, noted that the team is eager to make a statement.

“I believe that multi-format series will be intense, with the memories of the World Cup lingering. We are keen to get back at them, and we have shown strong form across all formats. The multi-format series is fantastic for women’s cricket, and it’s an exciting way to determine the best nation. You need a well-rounded squad capable of competing in all three formats,” she remarked.

For the time being, Litchfield remains focused on contributing runs and learning from her teammates, but with endorsements from icons like Lanning, her journey toward leadership may already be unfolding.
