Is El Hadji Malick Diouf Ready for His New Challenge with West Ham?

London, July 16 (NationPress) West Ham United has finalized the acquisition of Senegalese international El Hadji Malick Diouf on a long-term deal, as confirmed by the Premier League club.

Diouf, donning the No 12 jersey, becomes the third signing this summer for West Ham, following Jean-Clair Todibo and Daniel Cummings. This move comes as the club reforms its defense after the exits of Aaron Cresswell and Vladimir Coufal.

The 20-year-old, who can play as a left-sided full-back or wing-back, transfers from Slavia Prague, where he significantly contributed to the club's strong performance in the Czech First League last season. He also shined in European matches and was a crucial member of the Senegal squad that achieved a historic win over England in June.

Diouf expressed enthusiasm about donning the iconic Claret and Blue shirt and joining his new teammates, expecting to participate in the Irons' pre-season training camp in Germany this week.

“I’m just thrilled. I’m excited to take on this new challenge. I’m really pleased to be here and eager to advance my career,” Diouf shared on the club's official website.

“Numerous teams showed interest in signing me, but I prioritized West Ham United after discussions with coach Graham Potter, who presented a compelling plan for me. Playing in the Premier League is a dream for many. Once you're here, you strive to excel. The players here have the right mentality, and as a young player, I aim to continue my development.

“It’s essential to maintain your character as a young player. It’s all about the team; the team’s success outweighs individual achievements. I want to assure the West Ham supporters that I’m genuinely happy to be with them. I believe we can have a fantastic season this year,” he added.

Diouf started his football journey at the Galaxy Football Academy when he was just 13. After four years, he spent time at Académie Mawade Wade before joining the Norwegian Eliteserien club Tromsø at 18 in February 2023. He made his debut in a Norwegian Cup victory against Start the following month, and during his single season at the club, he played 21 matches, netting three goals and helping Tromsø secure third place and qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

In January 2024, Diouf moved to Slavia Prague, scoring on his debut in a First League match against Karvina and making his European debut in a UEFA Europa League round of 16 clash versus AC Milan.

Last season, Diouf excelled, participating in all four UEFA Champions League qualifiers and eight Europa League group matches, scoring seven goals while Slavia dominated the First League, conceding only 18 goals in 35 games and winning the title by a remarkable 16 points.

His standout performances led to a senior debut for Senegal in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi in September 2024. He was a key player in Senegal's historic 3-1 triumph over England this summer, making them the first African nation to defeat England.
