Guwahati, Nov 26 (NationPress) India aims to draw from their determined draw against England in Manchester earlier this year as they strive to rescue the ongoing second Test match against South Africa, stated assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate prior to the start of day five’s play.
In their chase of 549, India concluded day four having lost openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, presenting a formidable challenge to prevent a defeat in their second home Test series within two years.
“This serves as the blueprint for preserving a match. Numerous vital elements will play a role today, with the players' mentality being paramount. We have identified the main threats after observing the first four days, particularly Jansen’s bounce and the spin of the ball,” explained ten Doeschate to broadcasters.
When asked about the team's discussions ahead of day five, ten Doeschate remarked, “It’s been a tough challenge. South Africa has performed excellently, and we find ourselves in a difficult position. Nevertheless, we have a chance to save the game, and the fifth day is critical for achieving a draw.”
In response to how India fell behind in the match, ten Doeschate noted, “Several factors contributed to this. South Africa has executed their strategy flawlessly to reach this stage. The toss was significant, and they batted exceptionally well for two days.”
“Although we bowled well for two days, we couldn't dismiss them. A subpar batting performance in the first innings has left us with a considerable task on the fifth day,” he added.
He concluded by stating that if the Indian batsmen focus and apply themselves, they can avert a loss. “The ball is still fairly hard. We also noticed that it seemed to turn slightly more in the morning, possibly due to the overnight dew.”
“Surviving the critical first hour will be crucial. However, it will be a challenge throughout the day. As I mentioned, the players must fully commit themselves to save this match.”
