Bikaner, Nov 26 (NationPress) Golom Tinku achieved a significant milestone in his burgeoning career by securing the gold medal in the men’s 60kg weight category at the Khelo India University Games in Rajasthan 2025. The 19-year-old from Arunachal Pradesh first gained attention during the second edition of the Khelo India Youth Games in Pune, and since then, he has continued to excel. Competing on behalf of Lovely Professional University (LPU), Golom lifted an impressive total of 256kg (Snatch 112kg; Clean & Jerk 144kg) to clinch the gold medal.
He outperformed his nearest rival, Khumbheswar Mallik from Chandigarh University, by lifting 33kg more, as Khumbheswar managed a total of 223kg. The bronze medal went to Sachin from CT University, who lifted a total of 214kg.
Golom's path to recognition at the Khelo India Youth Games was fraught with challenges. He began his weightlifting journey shortly before the tragic loss of his father in 2016, who died in an accident at their home in Godak village, Kamle district.
As the third of five siblings, Golom drew inspiration from his elder brother and sister. He initially trained at the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) campus in Naharlagun for three years before transitioning to the AOC centre in Secunderabad.
“My sister practiced karate there, and my elder brother played badminton. I started accompanying them just to watch. One day, a coach invited me to try weightlifting,” he recounted to SAI Media after his gold medal triumph.
Within just a few months, Golom's career soared as he broke records and excelled at state-level competitions. However, the passing of their father led to financial strain on the family, compelling his elder brother to abandon his badminton aspirations to support them.
Despite these challenges, Golom persevered, earning a bronze medal in his debut at the Khelo India Youth Games in Pune. He subsequently captured the gold medal at the Guwahati edition of KIYG and is now aiming for international competitions.
As a Khelo India athlete, Golom has secured three medals (one silver and two bronze) at the Asian championships, as well as a gold medal with a total lift of 230 kg at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023.
Currently training at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, Golom views the KIUG 2025 as an essential milestone ahead of the upcoming senior nationals. “This was my first Khelo India University Games, and winning gold is always special, but my journey is far from complete,” he stated.
Golom also acknowledged the support from the Khelo India scheme, which has helped fund his training. He believes this initiative has inspired youth from remote areas to take sports seriously.
The Khelo India initiative has transformed many athletic careers, offering opportunities for athletes to showcase their talents on a national platform, while also providing financial assistance that has helped numerous athletes thrive over the years.
