New Delhi, Sep 13 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Nilesh Kulkarni asserts that the team led by Suryakumar Yadav possesses a significant upper hand in the ongoing 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup. However, he emphasized that to secure the trophy, the players must maintain their performance and meet the high expectations set for them.
India kicked off their Asia Cup journey with an impressive nine-wicket victory over the UAE earlier this week. Their next challenge lies in a pivotal Group A match against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Following a game against Oman in Abu Dhabi on September 19, India aims to advance through the Super Four stage, hoping to compete in the title match in Dubai on September 28.
“I believe India is among the top contenders to reclaim this trophy. Yet, T20 cricket is inherently unpredictable; on any given day, a single moment can change everything, leaving no room for error,” Kulkarni explained.
“India does have a favorable position, but it is crucial for them to uphold the expectations that come with their current standing,” Kulkarni stated in an interview with IANS at the PlayCom 2025 summit on Saturday.
The former left-arm spinner, who represented India in three Tests and ten ODIs, commended the BCCI for establishing a robust structure that has fostered a deep pool of players for all three international teams.
“The strength of Indian cricket lies in the BCCI's system, which provides every talent with an opportunity, ranging from school tournaments to junior and state-level championships, culminating in international representation,” he remarked.
“In addition to developing a product like the IPL, India has built exceptional talent pathways, allowing players to consistently demonstrate their skills. Even after setbacks, they continue to receive opportunities to aspire to play for India,” he added.
He concluded by praising the IPL's monumental influence on the entire Indian cricket landscape. “Certainly, the IPL has created a remarkable platform for everyone. It not only allows players to showcase their talent but also provides financial stability that encourages them to think broader about their contributions. The BCCI's efforts in launching the IPL and creating such opportunities are commendable.”
