With the Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong on the horizon, the Indian football team is determined not to dwell on their previous 4-0 victory. Sandesh Jhingan emphasizes the importance of focusing on the present and preparing thoroughly for this critical match.

Key Takeaways

  • Focus on Current Performance: The team is prioritizing the present over past victories.
  • Training Regimen: Intensive training sessions are planned to enhance physical and mental preparedness.
  • Defensive Strategy: A solid defense is crucial for creating more attacking opportunities.
  • Learning from Losses: The team is analyzing previous games to improve performance.

Kowloon (HK-China), June 7 (NationPress) As the Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong, China, approaches, many from the Indian football camp will remember their last encounter with a dominant 4-0 victory over the Blue Tigers in Kolkata three years ago. However, for the Indian senior men’s national team, that victory is now just a distant memory.

Although the previous clash saw India triumph significantly, much has changed since then.

“In football, one should never rely on past achievements. I recall our match against them (in 2022) where we won 4-0, but that’s history now,” Jhingan remarked regarding the now-evolved Hong Kong team.

“We fully understand their capabilities and recognize the significance of this match.”

As they gear up for Matchday 2 of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers, the Indian senior men’s team conducted their initial training session in Hong Kong on Friday evening at the Jockey Club HKFA Football Training Centre in Tseung Kwan O.

The Blue Tigers have scheduled training sessions at the Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground over the weekend, culminating in an official practice at the newly built Kai Tak Stadium on matchday minus one (Monday). The Asian Cup qualifier on June 10 will mark the inaugural competitive football event at the 50,000-capacity venue.

Despite seeking to regain their form, the Blue Tigers remain optimistic and are concentrating on the necessary steps to reverse their fortunes after a 0-2 defeat to Thailand in a recent friendly.

Sandesh Jhingan, who led the team against Thailand on June 4, is determined to secure a favorable outcome against Hong Kong.

“Upon our arrival (in Hong Kong) after the Thailand match, our primary focus was on recovery. Nevertheless, since our training camp commenced in Kolkata (on May 18), our goal has always been to acquire maximum points against Hong Kong,” Jhingan stated.

“Preparing ourselves in the training sessions leading up to the game is crucial, ensuring we arrive at the match in optimal physical and mental condition, aiming for the best results,” he added.

While the loss to Thailand was disappointing, it provided the team with insights on areas needing improvement.

“We must be more decisive and efficient in both boxes. First and foremost, a strong defense is vital. If our defense is solid, we’ll create more opportunities to advance. Additionally, we need to enhance our attacking precision.

“The game had its positives and negatives, and we will learn from them,” he concluded.

Point of View

I believe the Indian football team must focus on the present rather than rely on past victories. The upcoming match against Hong Kong is crucial for the team's reputation and morale, and a strategic approach will be essential to achieving success.
