New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Jonatan Christie from Indonesia showcased a remarkable blend of strategy and composure, securing victory over Singapore's former world champion Loh Kean Yew in the men’s singles semifinals. Meanwhile, world number one An Se Young prepared for a thrilling women’s singles final against China’s Wang Zhi Yi at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open 2026, a BWF World Tour Super 750 event organized by the Badminton Association of India, held this Saturday.
In a gripping match, the third-seeded Christie staged a comeback from a 5-11 deficit in the first game, ultimately winning 21-18, 22-20 within 46 minutes to advance to the finals. Earlier, An Se Young triumphed over former champion Ratchnok Intanon of Thailand with a decisive score of 21-11, 21-7, while Wang triumphed against compatriot Chen Yu Fei with scores of 21-15, 23-21 in their respective semifinals.
During the men’s singles semifinal, Loh started aggressively, quickly establishing an 11-5 lead. However, Christie adapted his game style, engaging in prolonged rallies and leveraging his defensive abilities to exploit his opponent's errors. The Indonesian surged back, scoring six consecutive points to level the game at 15-15 and then used swift net taps and powerful smashes to clinch the first game.
In the second game, Loh initially struggled to regain focus, missing several smashes. However, as he regained his form, he took a 17-13 lead, but Christie’s aggressive play turned the tide once more. Christie required two match points to seal the victory, extending his winning streak over Loh to 9-0.
“In the second game when Loh started to come back, I held my nerves and adapted to the game better and managed to win,” Christie reflected post-match.
The Indonesian will now face the winner of the semifinal clash between Victor Lai of Canada and Lin Chun-Yi from Chinese Taipei.
