The India U20 men's football team has been placed in Group B of the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers, facing Uzbekistan, Syria, and Bangladesh following the draw held at AFC House in Kuala Lumpur on 28 May 2025. The group stage will be hosted by Uzbekistan in Tashkent from 25 August to 6 September 2026 in a centralised single round-robin format.

The New Format and What It Means

The AFC introduced a revised two-phase structure for its youth competitions earlier this year, incorporating a promotion and relegation mechanism. In the Qualification Phase, 32 teams have been divided into eight groups of four. Group winners and the seven best second-placed teams will advance to the 43rd edition of the AFC U20 Asian Cup, while the bottom team from each group faces relegation to the Development Phase of the next edition.

The Development Phase features 12 teams split into three groups of four, with group winners and runners-up earning promotion to the Qualification Phase of the subsequent edition.

India's Road to Qualification

Seedings were determined by performances across the three most recent editions — 2018, 2023, and 2025 — and the total number of participating teams. India, ranked 20th, were allocated Pot 3 in the Qualification Phase, drawing the group's host nation Uzbekistan as their stiffest challenge.

The Blue Colts are aiming to qualify for the AFC U20 Asian Cup for the first time since 2006, when India hosted the tournament. India's most celebrated moment in the competition remains their joint championship alongside Iran in 1974. In the 2025 edition, India narrowly missed qualification on goal difference — a painful near-miss that makes this cycle particularly significant.
