Vadodara, Jan 11 (NationPress) India secured the toss and chose to bowl first against New Zealand in the inaugural ODI of their three-match series at the Kotambi International Stadium (BCA).
The hosts faced a significant setback prior to the series opener as wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was sidelined due to a right side strain injury, leading to Dhruv Jurel stepping in.
All eyes will be on key players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both in exceptional form in the format across international and domestic stages. Kohli, in particular, is pursuing several milestones and aims to enhance his already remarkable record.
Following the toss win, India’s captain Gill discussed their game strategy, stating, “We aim to explore various combinations to determine what suits us best for different conditions, especially when playing in India. Bowling second can pose challenges with dew, so we’re testing combinations that align with our conditions. The pitch appears to be favorable.”
He further added, “I anticipate batting will be easier in the second innings with fresh players coming in, which motivated our decision to bowl first. After participating in the Vijay Hazare series, everyone has been in form, and we’ve played together extensively, fostering a calm and positive environment.”
Regarding the team composition, he mentioned that they have six bowlers, including spinners Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav, along with pacers Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana.
On the other hand, New Zealand is fielding a relatively inexperienced team and aims to present a strong challenge to the Men in Blue.
Michael Bracewell, leading the BlackCaps in the absence of Mitchell Santner, expressed a desire to bowl first but stated they were content to bat. “We are accustomed to the weather and have had productive net sessions. This series is significant for us; it’s a proud moment to represent New Zealand. Playing a World Cup in India is an advantage for us. We have new faces but also some experience. Kristian Clarke makes his debut today, and Aditya Ashok will be our main spinner,” he mentioned.
