India's Sub-Junior men's hockey team completed a flawless campaign to claim the inaugural AHF Youth Hockey5s Asian Championship 2026 title in Muscat on 26 July, defeating Pakistan 3-1 in the final to also secure qualification for the inaugural FIH Youth Hockey5s World Cup. The triumph marks India's first-ever Youth Hockey5s Asian Championship gold and caps an unbeaten seven-match run through the tournament.

A Dominant Campaign from Start to Finish

India left no room for doubt throughout the championship, opening with back-to-back victories over Bangladesh — 7-3 and 8-3 — before posting emphatic wins against hosts Oman by 14-0 and 10-1. In the Elite Pool, the side twice overcame Pakistan, winning 7-4 and 7-3, before sealing the gold with a 3-1 final victory over the same opponents. In all, India registered three wins against Pakistan across the tournament, underlining their superiority in the region.

Sardar Singh Hails Team's Character and Commitment

Sub-Junior men's hockey coach Sardar Singh, the former India captain, was effusive in his praise for the squad's attitude and preparation. 'I am immensely proud of the character and commitment shown by every player throughout the tournament. Winning all our matches, including three victories against Pakistan, reflects the hard work the boys have put in over the past few months,' he said.

Sardar added that the achievement carries significance beyond the trophy itself. 'This gold medal and qualification for the FIH Youth Hockey5s World Cup are richly deserved and will give these youngsters tremendous confidence for the future,' he said.

Role of Hockey India and Punjab University

Sardar was careful to credit the institutional support that underpinned the team's success. He thanked Hockey India for 'continuously investing in and supporting the development of our young players by providing them with every opportunity to excel.' He also acknowledged Punjab University for hosting the national coaching camp and offering what he described as 'world-class training facilities' that created 'the ideal environment for the team to prepare' ahead of the Muscat campaign.

By winning the Asian Championship, India have earned a berth at the inaugural FIH Youth Hockey5s World Cup — a new global stage for the format.
