CWG 2026: India's 124-member contingent gets grand send-off, Glasgow kit unveiled
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Team India's 124-member contingent for the Commonwealth Games 2026 received a grand send-off in New Delhi on Tuesday, 7 July, as the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) simultaneously unveiled the official ceremonial and competition kit the squad will wear at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, scheduled from 23 July to 2 August 2025. The ceremony marked India's formal departure for Scotland, with athletes, coaches, and officials gathering ahead of what the IOA hopes will be another medal-rich campaign.
Key Dignitaries at the Send-Off
The event drew a high-profile audience. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, addressed the gathering alongside Dr. PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association. Her Excellency Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India, was also present, as were Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Textiles; Hari Ranjan Rao, Secretary, Department of Sports; Rohit Rajpal, Chef de Mission; and Ravi Bengani, Deputy Chef de Mission.
What the Officials Said
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Mandaviya said, 'Under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, India is building a world-class sporting ecosystem that empowers our athletes to realise their full potential. Our athletes are the ambassadors of New India's sporting excellence, determination, and aspirations. I urge every athlete to compete fearlessly, uphold the highest spirit of sportsmanship, and give their very best.'
Dr. PT Usha added, 'Today marks the beginning of another proud chapter for Indian sport. Every athlete wearing the India jersey has earned this opportunity through years of hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. As they leave for Glasgow, they carry with them the hopes of a billion Indians.'
British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron extended her wishes, noting, 'These Games will showcase not only athletic excellence but also the unity, diversity, and enduring spirit of the Commonwealth. I know India is already preparing to welcome the Commonwealth sporting community to Ahmedabad for the centenary Games in 2030.'
The Official Kit: 'Invisible Trajectories'
The CWG 2026 kit was designed by acclaimed designer Aaquib Wani and developed by JSW Sports. Inspired by the concept of 'Invisible Trajectories', the design draws from the rhythm, precision, and flow of athletic movement, translating the unseen paths traced by athletes into intricate visual patterns inspired by spirographs. Athletes showcased both the ceremonial and competition attire in a ramp walk during the ceremony.
India's Glasgow Contingent: Disciplines and Scale
India is fielding 124 competitors — a mix of able-bodied and para-athletes — across 10 disciplines. The squad will compete in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, judo, gymnastics, cycling, lawn bowls, and swimming, as well as para-athletics, para-wheelchair basketball, para-powerlifting, para-swimming, and para-track cycling. The contingent will be led by Chef de Mission Rohit Rajpal and Deputy Chef de Mission Ravi Bengani.
Notably, the Glasgow Games come as India also looks ahead to hosting the Commonwealth Games centenary edition in Ahmedabad in 2030, underlining the country's growing ambitions in global multi-sport events. How the contingent performs in Scotland will set the tone for that home campaign.
