New Delhi, May 25 (NationPress) In a remarkable feat, both Indian squads in the 10m air rifle mixed team event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Suhl secured medals, with silver and bronze finishes. This achievement marks India's second double podium finish in just two days on Sunday.
The duo of Naraen Pranav and Khyaty Chaudhary clinched the silver medal, while Himanshu and Shambhavi Kshirsagar brought home the bronze, elevating India's total medal count to double digits (two gold, four silver, and four bronze) with two additional finals scheduled for Monday, May 26.
In the qualifying round, Khyaty and Naraen shot an impressive 631.0, placing them second among 38 teams and granting them the opportunity to compete for gold against the formidable Chinese team of Huang Yuting (an Olympic champion with multiple medals) and Huang Liwanlin (the junior air rifle world champion), who led with a combined score of 632.6.
The Indian pair demonstrated commendable resilience in the final, consistently matching the Chinese competitors' performance. They remained tied at 14 points as they entered the 15th series, but the Chinese edged ahead to claim gold by a narrow margin of 0.5 points.
Meanwhile, Himanshu and Shambhavi, who qualified fourth with a score of 629.5, faced a daunting 1-7 deficit against the American duo of Griffin Lake and Elijah Spencer. However, showcasing their determination, they turned the match around decisively, ultimately winning 17-9.
Earlier, Shambhavi and Ojasvi Thakur had achieved a 1-2 finish in the women’s air rifle event on Saturday, marking India’s inaugural double podium of the tournament.
Although the Trap finals were scheduled for later on Sunday, India would not have representation. The women’s team had not made the top six cut, and the men also fell short of qualifying.
