London, Aug 4 (NationPress) Following India's thrilling six-run victory over England in the fifth Test at The Oval, senior opener KL Rahul expressed that this triumph signifies everything for the visitors, emphasizing that it stands as one of their most significant achievements in overseas Test cricket.
In a nail-biting finish on day five, India needed to secure the last four wickets, successfully bowling England out for 367 while chasing 374. Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj showcased his skill by taking five wickets, earning the Player of the Match title.
“This victory means everything. Having played cricket for several years, I've witnessed India win the Champions Trophy and lift the World Cup; yet, nothing compares to this. There have been many doubts about the future of Test cricket,” Rahul stated during the post-match analysis.
“Both teams, through the way we've contested this series, have addressed those doubts. For our team, which was not expected to perform well, to fight back and end the series at 2-2 - it may appear as a draw.”
“However, for us and the future of Indian Test cricket, this victory ranks at the top. It signifies the start of a new era, and our team will achieve more series victories outside India. The entire team deserves this achievement,” Rahul added.
Rahul, who amassed 532 runs in the series at an average of 53.2, acknowledged feeling a shift in his role as a senior player. “Upon joining the team, it struck me that I was now in a position to guide the younger players on this tour of England. Not seeing senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R. Ashwin felt strange.”
“Players came to me seeking advice on conditions, which made me realize I needed to step up and support the younger guys with my experience,” he explained.
“I'm pleased with my individual performance. As openers, our objective was to provide a solid start for the team. I was determined to take on that responsibility,” he remarked.
In conclusion, Rahul praised Shubman Gill, stating he possesses all the qualities necessary to be an exceptional Test captain for India. “Shubman has been outstanding. He has led effectively and worked diligently with the team. His tactical decisions have consistently yielded results, and he will continue to grow as a leader, elevating this Indian Test team to new heights.”
