London, Aug 4 (NationPress) Bowling coach Morne Morkel is optimistic that India can achieve an unexpected victory by securing the last four wickets on Monday. He encouraged his team to maintain their determination on the concluding day of the fifth Test against England at The Oval.
The fifth and concluding Test of the captivating five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between England and India is set to reach a thrilling conclusion on Monday. Both teams are still vying for victory, with England requiring 35 more runs to clinch the match, while India needs to take four wickets for a remarkable win.
Following impressive centuries from Harry Brook and Joe Root, pacer Prasidh Krishna claimed two wickets in rapid succession during the final session, enabling India to mount a late comeback that sets the stage for an exciting finish on Day 5.
"You cannot afford to concede defeat in such a crucial Test match; it was essential for us to break that partnership. Bringing in a new batter can change the dynamics of the game, and we’ve witnessed many times how a single breakthrough can lead to more wickets and increase pressure on the batting side," Morkel stated at the press conference.
"It's vital for us to remain composed and work diligently to dismantle that partnership. Tomorrow, our focus should be on a solid warm-up to prepare the boys for hitting the right areas and creating some excitement again," he continued.
If India is to clinch the final four wickets and level the series at 2-2, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who is currently the leading wicket-taker in the series with 20 wickets, is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding the team to victory.
"I'm thrilled for Siraj and the recognition he’s receiving. He’s a natural leader in the changing room, even if he doesn’t speak much. His actions during this series have been commendable, stepping up when needed, whether by bowling extra overs or creating opportunities. His contributions have been significant, and it’s rewarding to see his efforts recognized," Morkel added.
"Once again today, he stepped up in crucial moments, providing vital support to lift the team. These are the smart plays required in high-pressure situations, and Siraj has been nothing short of exceptional," he concluded.
