New Delhi, Aug 10 (NationPress) As anticipation builds over India's squad selection for the upcoming Asia Cup scheduled in the UAE from September 9-28, former cricketer Priyank Panchal emphasizes the importance of choosing the best openers and finishers. He suggests that the rest of the batting lineup should remain adaptable according to the match situation.
India last engaged in a T20I match in February 2025, triumphing over England 4-1 in a home series. They are poised to return to the shortest format after a six-month break during the Asia Cup. Players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma have constituted the top-order in recent T20I series.
However, with Test captain Shubman Gill, B Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul showcasing impressive performances in IPL 2025, the composition of the batting order could present an intriguing challenge for the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee this month.
“We often overanalyze batting positions in T20s, leading to endless debates. Just select the finest openers and finishers, and allow the rest to adapt based on the game situation,” Panchal stated during his ‘Ask Me Anything’ session on ‘X’ on Sunday.
India's Asia Cup Group A fixtures include matches against UAE and a high-stakes encounter with Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10 and 14, respectively, with their clash against Oman scheduled for September 19 at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Group A consists of India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B includes Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. This edition of the Asia Cup is notable as it marks the first time the tournament will be held in T20I format, catering to teams’ preparations for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, with eight teams participating.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Fours stage, culminating in a title match in Dubai on September 28. India, the defending champions of the Asia Cup, secured victory against Sri Lanka in the 2023 final, held in the 50-over format in Colombo. Sri Lanka had clinched the Asia Cup in its T20I format by defeating Pakistan in the 2022 finale.
