Mumbai, Sep 2 (NationPress) The Indian women's cricket team faces a significant challenge ahead of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 as wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia has been ruled out of the competition due to a left knee injury acquired during the team's training camp in Visakhapatnam.
To fill her spot, Uma Chetry from Assam has been called up to join the squad for this prestigious tournament. The 21-year-old has played in seven T20Is for India but is yet to make her ODI debut, now stepping into a pivotal role at this critical juncture in her career.
Chetry will also take Bhatia's place in the ODI series against Australia, which precedes the World Cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the change through a statement: “The Women’s Selection Committee has named Uma Chetry as a replacement for Yastika Bhatia in India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia and the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
Bhatia suffered her injury during the preparatory camp in Vizag. The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring her recovery, and the team extends its best wishes for her swift return to fitness.”
Her absence is a considerable loss due to her experience and reliable performance as a wicketkeeper-batter in the middle order. However, Chetry now has the chance to showcase her talent at the highest level, while Richa Ghosh and the rest of the batting lineup will need to step up in her absence.
This injury has also prompted adjustments to the India A squad, slated to play a World Cup warm-up match. With Chetry advancing to the senior team, Minnu Mani will now lead the A side, which has been restructured to include Tejal Hasabnis, Prema Rawat, Priya Mishra, and others.
India, commanded by Harmanpreet Kaur, will kick off their World Cup journey on home soil following the ODI series against Australia, with expectations high despite this injury hurdle.
Details of the updated ODI squad against Australia are as follows:
Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh (WK), Kranti Gaud, Sayali Satghare, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Sneh Rana, Uma Chetry (WK).
