New Delhi, Oct 30 (NationPress) Abhishek Nayar has finalized all the required documentation for the position of head coach at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in preparation for IPL 2026, according to sources familiar with the matter as reported by IANS on Thursday.
Nayar, who previously held the role of assistant coach for the Indian national team and contributed to the squad's victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy, is set to take over from Chandrakant Pandit, as the two-time champions have parted ways following their failure to reach the playoffs in the 2025 IPL season.
He returned to the KKR coaching team mid-season during IPL 2025, stepping in as assistant coach after his tenure with the Indian team concluded. IANS has confirmed that Nayar's elevation from assistant to head coach at KKR is now official. “The necessary paperwork has been successfully processed. An official statement from the franchise is anticipated soon,” sources informed IANS.
Nayar boasts considerable coaching experience owing to his longstanding involvement with KKR in the IPL and his extensive collaboration with Indian cricketers like Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer. He is well-regarded in cricketing circles for his talent in identifying promising players.
Since joining the organization in 2018, he has managed the KKR academy and was integral to the coaching team that led KKR to victory in the IPL 2024. Players such as Rinku Singh, Venkatesh Iyer, Vaibhav Arora, Harshit Rana, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and Varun Chakaravarthy have acknowledged the significant impact of Nayar on their development as reliable players for the franchise.
Additionally, Nayar serves as the head coach for UP Warriorz (UPW) in the Women's Premier League (WPL), a role he took over in July 2025 after Jon Lewis departed. It will be intriguing to observe how he balances his responsibilities as head coach for two distinct teams within separate T20 franchise leagues in India.
Currently, Nayar's first challenge as KKR's head coach will be to formulate a robust strategy for the franchise in the upcoming mini auction scheduled for December this year, prior to the start of the 2026 season of the ten-team competition. Before that, he will also be devising strategies for UPW as they prepare for the WPL mega auction, expected in the final week of November.
