New Delhi, Nov 15 (NationPress) As the IPL 2026 auction approaches, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has urged the Punjab Kings to consider adding backup players for their key spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and leading bowler Arshdeep Singh.
Chahal and Arshdeep are pivotal to Punjab's bowling strategy, and the team aims to establish a robust bowling foundation for the upcoming season.
Chahal, who was acquired by Punjab Kings for Rs 18 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction after being released by Rajasthan Royals, played a vital role in their journey to the finals. Despite missing two matches due to a wrist injury, he secured 16 wickets in 14 matches, significantly contributing to Punjab’s campaign before they fell short against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
In contrast, Arshdeep emerged as a marquee player at the IPL 2025 auction, earning the title of the highest-paid fast bowler at Rs 18 crore when Punjab Kings activated their Right to Match (RTM) card. In IPL 2025, he became the franchise’s all-time leading wicket-taker, finishing as the team's top wicket-taker with 21 wickets across 17 games.
Pathan stated, “Punjab must focus on two key aspects before the auction. Firstly, having a dependable backup spinner is essential to support Yuzvendra Chahal, who is a critical component of the bowling unit. Secondly, though Arshdeep Singh is irreplaceable, it would be prudent to secure a backup Indian fast bowler for the squad.” This insight was shared during JioStar’s IPL 2026 ‘Retention Preview.’
Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden reflected on the Lucknow Super Giants challenging season, highlighting off-field issues along with their bowling struggles.
He noted, “Significant off-field problems plagued the LSG camp last season, indicating a discontented group. Given their difficulties, parting ways with Nortje for Kolkata Knight Riders could actually prove beneficial for LSG. Many within their bowling lineup faced injuries or were unavailable during the early part of the season, which posed a considerable challenge.”
Former Indian and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batsman Subramaniam Badrinath shared his thoughts on LSG's retention strategy, emphasizing that their captain Rishabh Pant will be a significant asset for the team.
He remarked, “LSG has committed 27 crores to Rishabh Pant as their captain, and I believe this investment is warranted. Although Pant didn’t showcase his full potential last season, he remains a player capable of making a substantial impact in the IPL. Once he regains his form, he’s definitely one to watch. However, the real challenge for LSG lies within their bowling lineup.”
