New Delhi, Jan 4 (NationPress) Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan expressed his backing for the seasoned fast bowler Mohammed Shami following his exclusion from the ODI squad despite his remarkable performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shami's prospects on the international stage have come under fresh scrutiny after the veteran pacer was again omitted from India’s lineup for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, which was announced on Saturday.
This exclusion represents yet another challenge for the 35-year-old, who hasn't donned the Indian jersey since being part of the Champions Trophy-winning team in 2025. Despite making a comeback to competitive cricket after an injury hiatus, Shami has missed selection for the Test series against England, West Indies, and South Africa, as well as the recent ODI series against Australia.
Pathan remarked, "The most significant discussion point is Mohammed Shami. What lies ahead for him? He is not a newcomer who has just played a few matches. With 450-500 international wickets to his name, that’s an impressive tally. When a bowler with over 400 wickets faces exclusion and fitness questions arise, that's universal. In cricket, proving oneself is an ongoing necessity."
Irfan further questioned the reasons behind the concerns regarding Shami’s fitness, emphasizing the substantial workload he has already managed since returning to play.
“Shami has already bowled 200 overs. If fitness is a concern after such a performance, what more is expected? Only the selection committee knows their reasoning. If I were in his position, I would participate in the IPL and make a significant impact. I would take the new ball and perform exceptionally well.
“While domestic cricket performances are scrutinized, if you showcase your rhythm and fitness during the IPL, it's hard to overlook you. The IPL garners global attention, and performing well there could secure your place in the squad again. I believe his opportunities should remain open,” he added.
India is scheduled to host New Zealand in a three-match ODI series starting on January 11, which will be followed by a five-match T20I series.
