New Delhi, Nov 17 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara believes that there is a deeper issue within the Indian team following their disappointing 30-run defeat against South Africa at Eden Gardens on Sunday.
After India suffered a collapse to 93 all out in the fourth innings while pursuing 123 runs, Pujara criticized the batters’ mindset on a pitch that displayed variable bounce and turn right from the start. However, he emphasized that the blame for the loss should not rest solely on the batters.
"I disagree with the notion that India’s defeat at home can simply be blamed on a transitional phase. While it’s common to face challenges abroad during a transition, the current Indian lineup boasts abundant talent and impressive first-class records. Players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Washington Sundar, and Shubman Gill have all demonstrated their capabilities. If the team is losing at home despite this, it indicates that something else is wrong," he stated on JioStar.
Pujara also remarked that India would have likely secured victory had the match been contested on a favorable pitch. He underscored India’s historical strength at home, asserting that even the Indian A team could put up a strong fight against the Proteas under similar conditions.
"If this match had been held on a better pitch, India’s chances of winning would have been considerably enhanced. The nature of such wickets diminishes our winning percentage and levels the playing field for the opposition. Given the depth of talent, even an India A team could pose a challenge to South Africa at home. Thus, attributing this loss in India to a transitional period is not justified," he observed.
The hosts now face a critical opportunity to recalibrate their strategy in the upcoming second Test in Guwahati to avert a clean sweep in the series against the reigning world champions.
