New Delhi, Nov 25 (NationPress) Former all-rounder Suresh Raina has called on Indian batters to enhance their focus, as the home team faced significant backlash after their 30-run defeat against South Africa in Kolkata.
India struggled to meet a modest target of 124 runs in the final innings, resulting in a loss to the reigning World Test Championship holders. With the second Test also trending towards a similar disappointing outcome, Raina emphasized the need for batters to correct their errors and contribute positively to the team's objectives.
"We need to elevate our batting performance as we are consistently losing matches. Players must enhance their focus, as doing so will boost their self-confidence, which is crucial for both them and the team," Raina expressed to IANS on Tuesday.
Despite trailing 0-1 in the two-match series, India was all out for 201 in their first innings in Guwahati, while South Africa amassed an impressive 489. The visitors then added 260 runs in their second innings before declaring on Tuesday, setting a daunting target of 549 for India.
India's second innings began poorly, losing both openers - Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) and KL Rahul (6) - before the close of play on Day 4. Currently, India faces a daunting 522 runs deficit, risking a second consecutive series sweep.
The seasoned batter noted that the team's additional challenges become apparent during losing streaks, a sentiment echoed by the Indian Test squad, which is currently without their regular captain, Shubman Gill, due to a neck injury.
"I hope they will exert more effort on the field. When you lose, everything seems to unravel, but I remain hopeful that the team will perform better," Raina added.
India faces the formidable challenge of surviving the entire day on Wednesday to secure a draw and avoid a series whitewash.
