ISL 2024-25: Mohun Bagan SG Claims Top Spot with 2-0 Victory Against NorthEast

Guwahati, Dec 8 (NationPress) Mohun Bagan Super Giant continued their strong performance with a 2-0 victory against NorthEast United FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati during the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season on Sunday.

In the second half, two remarkable goals from Manvir Singh and Liston Colaco secured all three points for the Mariners, propelling them to the top of the table with 23 points.

The match was intense right from the start, with the visitors taking charge early on. The first significant opportunity came in the 10th minute when Liston Colaco hit the post after maneuvering past several defenders. Nine minutes later, NorthEast United FC responded with a brilliant cross from Alaaeddine Ajaraie, which Nestor Albiach expertly controlled before firing a powerful shot. However, Vishal Kaith made an incredible save to deny the Highlanders the opening goal.

Just a minute later, Dimitrios Petratos delivered a swerving cross to Liston in the box. Although Liston managed to evade his defender, his shot lacked the power to trouble Gurmeet Singh. Near the end of the first half, Petratos almost gave the Mariners the lead with a long-range effort, but Gurmeet brilliantly parried the ball, leaving both teams tied at halftime.

The breakthrough came in the 65th minute when Manvir Singh skillfully cut in from the right and placed the ball into the top left corner before the Highlanders could react. This goal shifted the momentum, allowing the visitors to take control and create more opportunities.

In the 71st minute, their persistence paid off when Liston expertly lost his marker and curled a shot past Gurmeet at the far post, doubling the Mariners' advantage.

In the 87th minute, Greg Stewart and Deepak Tangri were introduced as Molina aimed to secure the win. The Highlanders made a few attempts in the closing minutes, but the visitors defended resolutely, achieving their sixth clean sheet of the season.
