ISL 2024-25: NorthEast United Triumphs 3-0 Over Chennaiyin, Secures Playoff Spot

Chennai, March 3 (NationPress) Nestor Albiach, Jithin MS, and Alaaeddine Ajaraie each netted a goal as NorthEast United FC marked their return to form with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday night.

The scoring began with a strike from Albiach in the early minutes, followed by contributions from Jithin and Ajaraie during a first-half onslaught. Chennaiyin FC had opportunities in the second half but couldn't capitalize on their chances. This victory propelled the Highlanders to 35 points from 23 matches, ensuring their playoff qualification for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

NorthEast United FC exhibited remarkable intensity from the outset, pushing forward in search of goals. Their early pressure forced Mohammed Nawaz to make a save in the fifth minute. Moments later, Nestor opened the scoring for the Highlanders, initiated by Ajaraie, who delivered a brilliant flick. Nestor skillfully controlled the ball and placed it into the bottom right corner.

Things grew more challenging for the Marina Machans as they conceded again in the 26th minute. The play began with Mohammed Ali Bemammer engaging in a give-and-go with Jithin before passing to Ajaraie, who located Jithin's run and finished with precision.

NorthEast United FC further extended their lead in the 38th minute, with Jithin shaking off his defender and finding Ajaraie in the box. Despite Ryan Edwards' solid block on Ajaraie's first attempt, the Moroccan capitalized on the rebound to net his 21st goal of the season.

Almost scoring again just before halftime, Ajaraie was denied by a slight miss after receiving a lobbed pass from Nestor. As the first half concluded, Vincy Barretto had a shot on target, but Gurmeet was quick to prevent any threats.

The second half saw Owen Coyle make three substitutions, bringing in Lukas Brambilla, Jitendra Singh, and Laldinpuia in a bid to regain control. Brambilla nearly made an immediate impact with a shot that Gurmeet saved. Wilmar believed he had reduced the deficit with a strike in the 78th minute, but was flagged offside.

Things took a turn for the hosts when Ryan Edwards received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Ajaraie near the penalty area. Chennaiyin FC pressed forward, creating chances, especially in the second half, but ultimately lacked the finishing touch. This match marked the seventh clean sheet of the season for the Highlanders.

Chennaiyin FC will face Jamshedpur FC at home on March 9, while NorthEast United FC will host East Bengal FC in Shillong on March 8.
