Chennai, March 2 (NationPress) Chennaiyin FC is looking towards the future as they prepare to face NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League 2024-25 on Monday, marking their penultimate regular season match.
In a press conference on Sunday, head coach Owen Coyle emphasized the importance of their performance in these final two matches. He stated, “Finishing strong is crucial, as we’ve aimed to do over recent weeks. Our recent victory against East Bengal, a win against Punjab, and a solid showing against Bengaluru demonstrate our progress. We aspire to secure as many points as possible while gearing up for the Super Cup.”
Coyle added, “A couple of players will get their chances against NorthEast United, and they need to capitalize on those opportunities. We created fantastic chances against Bengaluru that should have converted into goals. We aim to be more precise and also work on not conceding unnecessary goals.”
Previous encounters between the Marina Machans and the Highlanders have been high-scoring, with an average of 5.6 goals in the last five matches. Chennaiyin has outperformed their rivals, winning four of these five games, with results such as 3-2, 4-3, and 7-3.
Coyle noted, “The opponent we face has significant motivation. NorthEast United understands that a win would secure them a playoff spot; even a draw would benefit them as they have teams hot on their heels.”
“For us, performing well at home is essential. Our home record has been disappointing, but we have two home games left, and we aim to finish them on a high note. We also want to bring joy to our loyal supporters who have stood by us through thick and thin.”
Joining Coyle was fullback Ankit Mukherjee, who shared his challenging season and future aspirations, stating, “Following my injury, many believed I’d miss the rest of the season. It took time to recover, but I now feel great. When I joined Chennaiyin, the coach (Coyle) believed in me and gave me chances. I hope to continue here next season.”
Regarding injuries, Coyle mentioned he will make late decisions on Lalrinliana Hnamte and Kiyan Nassiri, both of whom are dealing with illness. Aside from them and Laldinliana Renthlei, who is confirmed out, Coyle indicated he should have the complete squad available.
