Chennai, Feb 14 (NationPress) Maintaining their drive and seeking redemption for a previous loss will be the focus for Chennaiyin FC as they host Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai this Saturday for their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 showdown.

The Marina Machans have put a challenging stretch behind them by returning to victory in their last match against East Bengal FC. This opportunity not only allows them to build on that success but also to avenge their earlier 3-2 loss to Punjab, who currently sit above Chennaiyin in the league standings by a spot and three points.

In his pre-match press conference, head coach Owen Coyle discussed the team's aspirations for the playoffs, stating, “You’re driven for every match. It's crucial to recognize that if we had mirrored our away form with our home form, we’d already secure a playoff position. However, we aim to finish the season on a high. We have three home games left, and we want to take them one at a time and replicate the performance from last week.”

“There have been close calls, but that’s part of the game. We can’t field the same defensive line-up as last game, but we aim to finish strong and bring joy to our fans,” he added, noting that Laldinliana Renthlei and PC Laldinpuia will be unavailable due to injury and suspension, respectively.

One player determined to end the season on a high note is Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, who made a comeback from injury last week, stepping into the starting eleven against East Bengal as a left-back. Reflecting on his season, Vignesh acknowledged his development and the invaluable support from his teammate Mandar Rao Dessai.

“My game time has been limited this season; I understand the feeling of sitting on the bench and training hard to return to the squad. During these times, I strive to perform my best, make a lasting impression on the coaches, and showcase my character,” Vignesh shared, emphasizing Mandar's role in his journey.

“Mandar bhai has been a mentor to me since our early days, always inspiring younger players with his professionalism, discipline, and more. Even when he’s not on the pitch, he continues to support me, guiding me from the sidelines.”

The clash between Chennaiyin and Punjab marks the beginning of a series of home matches to conclude the season, with the Marina Machans set to compete in front of their fans in three of their last four games.
