Chennaiyin FC Targets Essential Win in Derby Showdown Against Kerala Blasters
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 5 (NationPress) Chennaiyin FC is determined to clinch their inaugural victory of the Indian Super League 2026 season in a pivotal derby against Kerala Blasters FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi this Saturday.
Following their first point of the season from the last encounter, the Marina Machans are looking to gain momentum as they approach the final away fixture of a demanding four-match opening stretch. On the other hand, Kerala, still in search of their first points in ISL 2026, is expected to present a formidable challenge before embarking on a five-game home series, as noted by head coach Clifford Miranda.
“They’ve faced some misfortune in their previous matches, despite showing possession and territorial control while creating opportunities. In a few instances, they missed chances until the dying moments of the match and were also unlucky with a deflected goal. They are performing well; it’s just that luck hasn't favored them. We are fully aware that this is going to be an extremely challenging game,” Miranda explained in the pre-match media briefing on Thursday.
Encounters between Chennaiyin and Kerala are known for their high intensity, often filled with drama and excitement over the years. The Marina Machans are trailing by one point in their head-to-head record and are eager to reverse that trend in this crucial early-season showdown. Miranda highlighted the significance of this match and stressed the importance of maintaining focus on the team’s ongoing progress.
“Every match holds value, especially at this juncture when the season is brief; thus, each match and point is critical. Naturally, the Derby adds an extra layer of excitement, but even if it were another game, its importance would remain unchanged,” Miranda remarked.
“In terms of our performance, we are in a developmental phase. We are making progress in certain areas, but the concluding phase is always the most vital and challenging. We are aiming to improve step by step. As I've mentioned previously, this represents a new style, a different approach than what the team has been accustomed to over the last two years. It will require time, but the quicker we adapt, the better it will be for us, the club, and everyone connected with us, including the fans,” he added.
Goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz, a reliable figure in the goal, joined Miranda at the press conference, noting that maintaining a consistent team lineup has allowed him to perform optimally in the season's early matches. Up to this point, Chennaiyin has utilized the same defensive lineup in all three of their ISL 2026 games.
“The four defenders ahead of me are seasoned players and possess more experience than I do, which is incredibly beneficial. Even on the bench, we have capable players. Ultimately, our focus should be on solid defense. Consistency in our last few matches has enhanced my communication with them, allowing us to play together more effectively. There are minor aspects we need to refine, and we are actively working on that. Hopefully, we can address these details and improve in the upcoming matches,” the goalkeeper reflected.
Concerning team updates, Miranda mentioned that a late decision will be made regarding Irfan Yadwad's availability due to an injury. Other than Irfan and Daniel Chima Chukwu, the head coach is expected to have a full squad available for the match.
