Leeds, June 25 (NationPress) India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has confirmed that there will be no alterations to the workload management for star bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the rest of the ongoing Test series against England, despite the loss in the first match at Headingley.

Initially, it was determined that the pace leader would participate in only three out of the five Tests in this series as he carefully manages his back condition. Bumrah was the standout performer for India at Headingley, claiming 5-83 in the first innings, but was unable to stop England from successfully chasing down 371, resulting in a five-wicket defeat for India in the series opener.

“We won’t change our approach. Managing Bumrah’s workload is crucial for us, especially with a lot of cricket ahead,” Gambhir stated. “Before this tour, it was already established that he would play three Test matches, but we’ll evaluate how his body responds. However, we haven’t yet decided which two other Tests he will feature in,” he added.

During England's chase, Bumrah went without taking a wicket, allowing the hosts to achieve the second-highest successful fourth-innings chase in Test history. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley remained composed, successfully facing India’s leading pacers, including Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, along with the second change bowlers, Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna.

Prasidh and Shardul each picked up two wickets, while the seasoned trio of Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bumrah struggled to make a significant impact as England took the lead in the series.

“This bowling unit consists of one bowler with five Tests, one with four, one with two, and one yet to debut. Patience is key,” Gambhir defended his bowlers.

“In the past, we had four fast bowlers with over 40 Tests of experience. While this might not weigh heavily in one-day or T20 formats, it is vital in Test cricket, especially in countries like Australia, England, or South Africa. These are early days,” he said.

“If we hastily judge our bowlers after every match, how can we foster a robust bowling attack? Apart from Bumrah and Siraj, we lack experience, but they possess the quality that earned them a place in the team,” he continued. “We must continue supporting them as this journey is not just about one tour; it’s about building a fast-bowling arsenal for India’s future in Test cricket,” he concluded.

England is set to face India in the second Test at Edgbaston on July 2.
