Dubai, March 9 (NationPress) Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer concluded the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy as the second-highest run-scorer, having contributed 48 runs in the final match against New Zealand at Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.

Although Iyer narrowly missed a well-deserved half-century, he played a pivotal role in a critical 61-run partnership for the fourth wicket alongside Axar Patel while chasing a target of 252 runs.

The game began with a thrilling performance from India's captain, Rohit Sharma, as he struck his 58th ODI half-century off just 41 balls, establishing a solid foundation for the chase.

Rohit and Shubman Gill formed an impressive 105-run opening stand until New Zealand's captain, Mitchell Santer, dismissed Gill for 31 runs. Shortly after, Michael Bracewell stunned the crowd by claiming the wicket of Virat Kohli, who scored only 1 run.

As Iyer stepped in to join Rohit, the Indian captain's innings was cut short by Rachin Ravindra in the 27th over, marking a significant turning point for India. Rohit departed after scoring 76 runs, which included three sixes and seven fours.

Iyer maintained his composure and built an essential partnership with Axar, crucial for India's quest for their third title.

With a total of 241 runs across five matches, Iyer emerged as India's leading run-scorer and secured the second-highest position in the tournament, just behind Rachin Ravindra, who amassed 263 runs.

Kohli followed as India's second-highest run-scorer with 218 runs, ranking fourth overall.

Iyer's tournament began poorly against Bangladesh, but he rebounded with back-to-back half-centuries against arch-rival Pakistan (56 runs) and New Zealand (79 runs) during the group stage.

The middle-order batsman also made a significant contribution of 45 runs against Australia in the semi-final.

Earlier in the match, half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell (63 off 101 balls) and Michael Bracewell (53 not out off 40 balls) propelled New Zealand to a total of 251/7, after India's spinners collectively claimed five wickets, with wrist spinners Kuldeep and Varun Chakaravarthy each taking two wickets.
