Ahmedabad, June 2 (NationPress) Punjab Kings' bowling coach James Hope commended captain Shreyas Iyer for his composure during the chase against Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2, describing his remarkable 41-ball unbeaten 87 as a classy performance that propelled PBKS into the IPL final after an 11-year hiatus.
PBKS triumphed over the five-time champions MI by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday. Choosing to bowl first, Iyer's team effectively limited MI to 203/6. In response, the captain showcased his leadership by scoring an impressive 87 runs off just 41 balls, securing the victory with an over to spare.
“We aimed to chase in this game, knowing it was a high-scoring pitch. We strategized with our impact player in case we batted first, but our focus was on executing our bowling plan,” Hope stated.
“At one point, Iyer was at 24 off 20 balls, but then he shifted gears as he has demonstrated throughout this tournament. It was an exceptional display,” he added.
Hope further lauded Iyer’s captaincy, noting his ability to maintain a sense of calm in the locker room despite the prior loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
“Shreyas is not just a phenomenal captain but also a remarkable player. After our loss to RCB, it’s important not to dwell on the reasons behind it; things just happen in cricket,” he remarked.
He also acknowledged the collective effort of the batting lineup, highlighting contributions from Josh Inglis (38 off 21) and Nehal Wadhera (48 off 29), while also commending the team’s strategy to neutralize Jasprit Bumrah.
“Wadhera played beautifully, and Inglis’s early assault on Bumrah was commendable. If you had told us we’d be chasing 200 and take 40 off Bumrah, we’d be thrilled,” Hope said.
During the post-match presentation, Iyer shared his mindset for significant matches, expressing his enjoyment for high-pressure situations. “I thrive on big occasions. I encourage my teammates that the bigger the moment, the calmer we should remain for better results. I focused on my breathing rather than letting the pressure overwhelm me,” he explained.
Punjab Kings will face RCB in the final, with Iyer emphasizing his team's readiness and positive mindset for the challenge ahead. “I want to savor this moment and celebrate with my team for reaching the final,” he stated. “However, I believe our job is only half complete. I’ll stay present, relax, and prepare myself for the final match,” he concluded.
