Wasim Jaffer enters race for BCCI senior selection committee post
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former India opener Wasim Jaffer has entered the race for the vacant spot on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) senior men's selection committee, adding a significant new dimension to the contest. According to multiple sources, Jaffer was among the prominent names interviewed virtually by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which comprises former India players Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe.
Key Candidates Interviewed
Alongside Jaffer, former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar, ex-pacer Salil Ankola, and the Baroda duo of Jacob Martin — who represented India in 10 ODIs — and Connor Williams were also reportedly interviewed by the CAC. Notably, Parthiv Patel, who had been widely tipped as a strong candidate, did not apply for the role.
Why Jaffer's Entry Changes the Equation
The vacancy arose following the departure of Ajit Agarkar as chief selector, after which the BCCI opened applications for the position. Former left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who played 24 Tests for India, is currently serving as interim chairman of the selection committee.
Jaffer's candidacy could directly determine who leads the panel next. As per the BCCI constitution, the selector with the most Test caps among the five committee members automatically becomes chairman. With 31 Tests to his name — in addition to 2 ODI appearances — Jaffer would overtake Ojha on that count, should the CAC recommend his appointment.
Jaffer's Cricketing and Coaching Credentials
One of the most prolific run-scorers in Indian domestic cricket, Jaffer amassed more than 19,000 first-class runs, making landmark contributions to both Mumbai and later Vidarbha, with whom he won the Ranji Trophy. Beyond playing, Jaffer has accumulated considerable coaching experience — including IPL stints and roles with India and Bangladesh Under-19 teams. He is currently serving as mentor for Hyderabad in the 2026-27 domestic season.
Other candidates bring their own credentials. Powar, who played 2 Tests and 31 ODIs, previously served two stints as head coach of the Indian women's team. Ankola, who represented India in 1 Test and 20 ODIs, served as a national selector from January 2023 to August 2024, before being replaced to maintain regional balance on the panel.
Junior Selection Committee Also in Flux
Movement is also underway on the junior men's selection committee front. Powar had previously been considered a frontrunner for the top job on the junior panel. However, if Powar moves to the senior selection committee, former India pacer Dodda Ganesh and Arjun Yadav are reportedly in contention to join the junior selection committee in his place.
What Happens Next
The CAC is expected to finalise the fifth senior selector's name soon. The outcome carries added weight given the 2027 Men's ODI World Cup build-up, which will be the selection committee's most consequential assignment in the near term. Whoever chairs the panel will play a pivotal role in shaping India's squad composition over the next critical cycle.
