New Delhi, May 24 (NationPress) The childhood coach of India's opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jwala Singh, believes that the opportunity to play under the new Test captain Shubman Gill marks the beginning of a new chapter for the left-handed batsman in the red-ball format.
Gill has recently been appointed as India's Test captain, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant serving as his deputy, ahead of the crucial five-Test series against England, which kicks off on June 20.
Jaiswal has retained his position in the 18-member squad for the tour after emerging as India’s leading run-scorer during the Australia series. He accumulated 391 runs in five Tests, boasting an average of 43.44. His performance included a century and two half-centuries, demonstrating his skill in challenging foreign conditions while other Indian batters found it difficult.
“His selection was inevitable after his success in Australia; thus, it was not surprising that he was the highest run-scorer (for India). This will be the start of a new journey for him with Shubman Gill becoming captain for the first time. The tour to England will be a challenge, especially since most players are young, except for KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah,” Jwala Singh stated to IANS following the announcement of India’s squad on Saturday.
When asked about Jaiswal's batting position in England, his childhood coach expressed confidence that he would continue to open for India in the Test side. “I believe Jaiswal will remain an opener as he has delivered most of his performances from that position.”
Jwala Singh also mentioned the upcoming challenges for Gill due to the absence of senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin, who have announced their retirements from the red-ball format.
“This tour will indeed be demanding for Gill, especially since his recent series against Australia was not particularly strong. He needs to perform both as a player and as a captain during this tour,” he added.
The Test series between India and England is scheduled from June 20 to August 4, taking place at venues including Headingley, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval. India is aiming to secure a Test series victory in England for the first time since 2007.
