Birmingham, July 2 (NationPress) Yashasvi Jaiswal maintained his impressive form in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series by scoring an unbeaten 62, helping India to a total of 98/2 in 25 overs during lunch on the first day of the second Test against England at a bright and sunny Edgbaston on Wednesday.

The session unfolded in two distinct parts for the Indian team after they were asked to bat first by England's captain Ben Stokes. A brilliant performance from Chris Woakes dismissed KL Rahul, but Jaiswal successfully navigated a challenging phase, where he was at just 16 runs off 34 balls at one stage, achieving his 11th Test fifty and forming a partnership of 80 runs with Karun Nair for the second wicket.

Despite Nair's dismissal due to a sharp delivery from Brydon Carse, Jaiswal, who had scored a century at Headingley, and skipper Shubman Gill (one not out) looked to seize the chance to score more runs as the ball aged in the next session. With minimal movement for seam bowlers, Jaiswal unleashed his batting prowess, driving Carse for boundaries.

The local hero Woakes was rewarded for his efforts when KL Rahul fell for just two runs after chopping onto his stumps. He almost had both Jaiswal and Nair leg before wicket, but the decision went in favor of the latter.

Nair showcased exquisite timing in his shots, executing drives and flicks between mid-on and mid-wicket. With Josh Tongue struggling with accuracy, Jaiswal capitalized, hitting three boundaries in both the 16th and 22nd overs, ultimately reaching his fifty with a combination of hooks and slashes.

Carse returned to claim Nair's wicket, caught at second slip, as Jaiswal and Gill exited the field at the end of a session where both teams shared the spoils.
