Shenzhen, Feb 17 (NationPress) Japan had to battle back twice to earn a 2-2 draw against Syria in their AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2025 Group D encounter at the Longhua Cultural and Sports Centre Stadium on Monday.

The outcome lifted Japan to four points, while Syria, who suffered a loss to Korea Republic in their first match, lamented missed chances following a commendable performance.

Japan, fresh off a 3-0 triumph over Thailand, demonstrated their intentions early. In the fourth minute, Kosei Ogura's long-range shot went over the bar. Syria's goalkeeper Maksim Sarraf quickly intervened, thwarting a potential goal by intercepting a cross intended for Yutaka Michiwaki in the sixth minute. However, it was Syria who took the lead in the 10th minute when Mahmoud Al Omar’s well-timed pass found Mohammad Al Mustafa, who skillfully slid the ball past Japan’s goalkeeper Rui Araki.

Japan responded swiftly, applying pressure and equalizing in the 24th minute through Yuto Ozeki. After a cross from Katsuma Fuse, Ozeki placed the ball into the bottom corner, eluding Sarraf.

Syria regained their advantage in stunning fashion in the 33rd minute. A fierce free-kick by Aland Abdi hit the crossbar, and Ahmad Soufi's follow-up shot ricocheted off the left post and into the net, putting Syria ahead once again.

In the second half, Japan intensified their attack. They nearly scored in the 61st minute, but Kazunari Kita’s header was saved by Sarraf. Syria had an opportunity to extend their lead in the 68th minute, but Abdi’s free-kick was blocked. Five minutes later, Sarraf made a crucial save, denying Soma Kanda.

Japan’s determination bore fruit in the 85th minute when Rento Takaoka capitalized on a loose ball in a crowded box to net the equalizer. Japan is set to face Korea Republic on Thursday, while Syria will challenge Thailand.
