Navi Mumbai, Oct 31 (NationPress) Former Indian captain Mithali Raj praised the remarkable performance of Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored a breathtaking century against Australia during the Women’s World Cup semi-final at DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, leading the home side to the ultimate showdown.
This outstanding batting exhibition from the local talent included 14 boundaries, complemented by Harmanpreet Kaur’s vital innings of 89, forming a solid 167-run partnership that laid the groundwork for India’s historic chase of 339 runs.
“This is precisely what a thrilling semi-final in a World Cup should be, with two elite teams, India and Australia, going toe-to-toe. The narrative unfolds. Jemimah Rodrigues’s innings was a timeless spectacle, particularly in a high-pressure semi-final where India required players to step up,” Mithali stated on JioStar.
“Australia recognized the game’s importance, performing exceptionally to post 338. Despite losing Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, who were in phenomenal form, India remained resilient. Jemimah, entering at number three, alongside Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, effectively stabilized the innings.
“At no point did it appear that India was out of the race. Contributions from Richa Ghosh, Amanjot, and Deepti Sharma further bolstered the innings. However, it was Jemimah’s century that truly unified India and brought them across the finish line. Scoring a hundred in a knockout match guarantees your team's progression, and that’s precisely what Jemimah accomplished.”
Indian head coach Amol Mazumdar elaborated on the atmosphere in the dressing room following Australia’s impressive total of 338. He shared his motivational message to the players before embarking on a historic chase.
“There was just one line written on the whiteboard in the dressing room before the match, 'we need one more run than them to win the semi-final'. That’s it. No lengthy speeches, no intricate strategies.
“These players possess enough talent; we have faith in them, and they trust one another. It was about allowing them to express themselves and respond on the field. The message was clear: score one run more than Australia,” he said.
