IPL 2026: Spencer Johnson says playing for CSK feels 'very special'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Australian left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson has described his time with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2026 as one of the most meaningful experiences of his franchise cricket career, citing the electric atmosphere, passionate fan support, and dressing-room unity as qualities that set the Chennai outfit apart from other teams globally.
What Johnson Said About the CSK Environment
Johnson, who joined CSK as a replacement for Nathan Ellis this season, acknowledged that franchise cricket can often feel transactional, with players rotating across leagues and rosters with little sense of belonging. He said the culture built at CSK under head coach Stephen Fleming has been the difference.
'Well, you can hear the crowd now. It's unbelievable. I think it can be a little bit transactional playing for so many different teams, but coming here, Fleming has been awesome. The whole group sticks together, so it's very special,' Johnson told broadcasters ahead of CSK's clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Johnson on His Physical Recovery and Readiness
The pacer also addressed his return to competitive action following a period of physical recovery. He said his body responded well to the renewed intensity of match conditions, which differ considerably from net sessions.
'Yes, it recovered all well, thank you. It was nice to get that extra intensity the other night. It's a little bit different from bowling in the nets, but no, I recovered well,' Johnson said.
Staying Mentally Prepared Despite Uncertain Role
Johnson revealed that he was not always certain of his place in the playing XI but maintained his mental readiness throughout. He credited teammate Overton as an example he sought to follow once he got his opportunity.
'I probably wasn't expecting to play, but I'm always making sure I am ready to play. And we saw how good Overton was, and I was kind of just trying to follow what he did and how he did it,' he explained. He added: 'Once I got the all clear in Australia to come over here, the handbrake was off, and I've been trying to bowl as fast as I can.'
IPL 2026 Numbers So Far
Johnson has featured in one match in IPL 2026 to date, returning figures of 1 wicket for 39 runs in four overs. With CSK's campaign progressing, his role as a pace option off the bench could become increasingly significant in the knockout stages.
