IPL 2026: CSK Signs Spencer Johnson as Nathan Ellis' Replacement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 24 (NationPress) The renowned five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), have officially signed Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson as a substitute for Nathan Ellis, who is sidelined for the entire season due to a hamstring injury.
Previously, Johnson had committed to the Quetta Gladiators for the 2026 season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), but withdrew shortly before the tournament commenced. His exit was confirmed on March 15, as he mentioned personal reasons for his decision.
With experience in 13 international matches – comprising 5 ODIs and 8 T20Is – for Australia and a total of 18 international wickets, Johnson has also played for Gujarat Titans (GT) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL.
According to the IPL's official announcement, "Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have secured a replacement for the injured Nathan Ellis ahead of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL). Spencer Johnson will join CSK for INR 1.5 Crore as Ellis's replacement."
Last season, while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Spencer Johnson participated in only 4 matches, claiming 1 wicket with his best figures being 1/42. In the IPL 2024 season, he took part in five matches for Gujarat Titans, securing four wickets at an economy of 9.4.
Johnson faces a significant challenge stepping in for Ellis, who had impressive stats with 19 wickets from 17 IPL matches. Ellis was acquired by CSK for Rs 2 crore during the 2025 mega auction after a four-season stint with the Punjab Kings and was retained before the start of the 2026 season.
The 31-year-old has been in excellent form for Australia over the past year and was anticipated to play a crucial role for CSK following the departure of their top bowler Matheesha Pathirana, who is set to play for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) this season.
CSK will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign on March 30 against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. They will then face the Punjab Kings on April 3 and the Delhi Capitals on April 11 at their home venue, M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, before heading to Bengaluru for a match against the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), on April 5.
CSK had a disappointing run last season, finishing at the bottom of the table with only four wins out of 14 matches, becoming the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention.
